Naftal Assesses Energy Cooperation and Investment Opportunities in Niger Under SONIDEP Partnership
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS/NIAMEY – Algeria’s state-owned fuel distribution company Naftal is advancing discussions on future energy cooperation with Niger through a series of field inspections and technical assessments aimed at identifying investment opportunities under its recently signed memorandum of understanding with the Petroleum Products Company of Niger (SONIDEP).
According to a statement issued by Naftal, the Algerian delegation is conducting an extensive mission across several Nigerien regions to evaluate strategic energy infrastructure and potential investment sites as part of efforts to operationalise the bilateral agreement and strengthen cooperation between the two companies.
The inspection programme included visits to several facilities operated by the Petroleum Products Company of Niger in the city of Zinder, where the delegation reviewed fuel storage and distribution infrastructure, including a fuel depot and gas cylinder filling centres. The visits focused on assessing operational capacities and identifying opportunities for future collaboration in the downstream petroleum sector.
Naftal representatives also inspected additional sites earmarked for possible future investments in fuel storage and distribution. The assessments examined the technical and logistical capabilities of the locations, as well as their suitability for projects currently under consideration by both parties.
Following the completion of activities in Zinder, the delegation travelled to Agadez and Tahoua, where it conducted further technical inspections of two proposed investment sites, fuel storage and distribution centres operated by the Petroleum Products Company of Niger, and facilities dedicated to gas cylinder filling operations.
Before returning to Niamey, Naftal experts carried out a comprehensive evaluation of the various locations to determine their technical potential and identify the most viable options for the development of future joint projects between the Algerian and Nigerien energy companies.
According to the company, these field visits constitute a key phase in the operational implementation of the partnership and are intended to gather the technical, economic and logistical data required for feasibility studies covering several strategic areas of cooperation.
The projects under examination include the development of bitumen-related activities, the expansion of fuel storage and distribution capacities, the enhancement of gas cylinder filling infrastructure, and the establishment of specialised training programmes aimed at strengthening technical expertise and human resource development.
Naftal noted that the information collected during the mission will serve as the foundation for future investment decisions and project planning, reflecting both companies’ ambitions to deepen industrial cooperation and support the development of energy infrastructure in Niger.
Throughout the mission, the Algerian delegation was received by local authorities in the cities visited. Officials highlighted the potential economic benefits of the proposed projects, emphasising their expected contribution to local development, job creation, and the strengthening of regional energy supply networks.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by Algeria and Niger to expand economic cooperation, reinforce energy partnerships, and promote mutually beneficial investment projects capable of supporting long-term development objectives in both countries.
