LAWRENCE, Kansas, June 15 — Local tourism officials in the U.S. city of Lawrence have welcomed the arrival of Algeria’s national football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the selection of the city as the team’s base camp as a significant opportunity for the local community.

Speaking to Dzair Tube, the head of tourism promotion in Lawrence said preparations for the tournament had begun nearly two years ago, well before the city was officially confirmed as a host base camp.

“We started planning about two years ago for the World Cup, but we did not know which team would eventually choose Lawrence,” she said.

According to the official, local authorities learned in December 2025 that the city was likely to host one of the tournament’s participating teams, prompting an intensified preparation process.

“Many teams visited the city, and we were waiting to know which national side would select Lawrence as its base camp,” she added.

The official said the announcement in February that Algeria had chosen Lawrence generated considerable excitement among local stakeholders and residents. Algeria officially selected Lawrence, Kansas, and the University of Kansas’ Rock Chalk Park as its World Cup base camp in February.

“We were very happy that they were coming,” she said.

She added that the city had since sought to deepen its understanding of Algeria, its football culture and its supporters in preparation for welcoming the delegation.

“We started learning about Algeria, its fans and its players,” she said.

The official concluded her remarks by highlighting the enthusiasm generated by the team’s arrival among local residents.

“Everyone in Lawrence now says: ‘One, two, three, Viva l’Algérie.’”

Lawrence will serve as Algeria’s operational base during the tournament, hosting the national team for training and preparation periods between matches.
