New Wheat and Barley Varieties Registered as Algeria Advances Food Sovereignty Agenda
By Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Algeria has officially registered six new varieties of durum wheat and barley in the national catalogue of seed and plant species, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to strengthen agricultural innovation and reinforce food security through scientific research.
Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari, announced that a ministerial decree formalising the registration of the new varieties has been published in the Official Gazette, allowing their integration into the country’s certified agricultural production system.
The newly registered varieties include three durum wheat strains—Gouraya, Ithri and Itij—and three barley varieties—Thiziri, Habiba and Thafath. According to Baddari, the achievement represents a tangible contribution to Algeria’s strategic objective of enhancing food sovereignty while providing farmers with improved production opportunities adapted to national agricultural requirements.
The minister described the development as a milestone that not only strengthens domestic agricultural capacities but also illustrates the growing role of Algerian universities and research institutions in addressing national development priorities through innovation-driven solutions.
In remarks published on social media, Baddari said the official recognition of the six varieties was the result of sustained scientific work led by Professor Leila Mekliche of the National Higher School of Agronomy. He praised the researcher’s contribution, noting that the achievement demonstrates the high level reached by Algerian agronomic research and its ability to respond to the country’s long-term strategic needs.
The registration comes amid broader national efforts to expand agricultural productivity, improve seed quality and reduce dependence on imported inputs. Agricultural research has increasingly been positioned as a key component of Algeria’s economic diversification strategy, particularly in sectors linked to food production and rural development.
