ALGIERS — Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb on Monday received at the Government Palace the Secretary General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum, Mohamed Hamel, along with a delegation on a working visit to Algeria from June 20 to 23, 2026.

The meeting focused on advancing the implementation of outcomes from the 7th Summit of Heads of State and Government of Gas Exporting Countries, hosted by Algeria in March 2024, with particular emphasis on operationalising the Gas Research Institute established in Algeria.

Discussions underlined the strategic importance of enabling the institute to fully assume its role as an international hub for research, capacity-building and expertise exchange in the gas sector, while contributing to member states’ efforts to address emerging challenges facing the global gas industry.

Both sides also reviewed progress on the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, which has entered the phase of practical implementation. The initiative, strongly supported within the Gas Exporting Countries Forum framework, is presented as a major strategic infrastructure aimed at reinforcing global energy security and strengthening intercontinental energy connectivity.

The Prime Minister stressed that the project forms part of the strategic vision of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which seeks to build an integrated African energy partnership based on solidarity, complementarity and shared development objectives. This approach aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and reinforces South–South cooperation while advancing continental integration.

The talks highlighted Algeria’s broader ambition to position itself as a key energy hub linking Africa, the Mediterranean and global markets, through large-scale infrastructure projects and enhanced cooperation within international energy institutions.
