ALGIERS — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Monday inaugurated the 57th edition of the Algiers International Fair at the Exhibition Palace (SAFEX) in Algiers, using the country’s flagship trade exhibition to highlight Algeria’s industrial transformation, expanding productive capacity and growing ambitions to position itself as a regional manufacturing and export hub.

Held under the theme “Confidence and Stability for Sustainable Growth,” this year’s fair brings together participants from 36 countries and hundreds of domestic and international companies, underscoring Algeria’s efforts to attract investment, deepen industrial integration and strengthen economic partnerships across Africa, the Mediterranean and beyond.

Upon arrival at the exhibition complex, President Tebboune was welcomed by senior state officials, members of government and representatives of economic institutions before beginning his tour at the Spanish pavilion, with Spain serving as guest of honour for this year’s edition. The president also visited the pavilions of Chad, Tunisia and the Sultanate of Oman, which are participating through numerous companies operating across diverse economic sectors.

During the visit, the president received a detailed presentation from Interior Trade and National Market Regulation Minister Amel Abdellatif on the evolution of Algeria’s economic fabric. The briefing highlighted the expansion of commercial activity, the growth in registered economic operators and the increasing number of businesses active in productive and service sectors since the National Production Fair held last December.

The presentation emphasized a structural transformation of the national economy, with industrial policy increasingly focused on import substitution, technology transfer, local value creation and the development of export-oriented industries. According to figures presented during the exhibition, Algeria has recorded significant progress in strengthening domestic production capabilities across a broad range of manufacturing sectors.

Particular emphasis was placed on industries that have achieved substantial penetration of the domestic market, including construction materials, household appliances, food-processing industries, cosmetics and personal-care products, household cleaning products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and home and office furniture. Officials indicated that local production now covers between 50 and 80 percent of national demand in several of these sectors, while certain product categories have reportedly reached full self-sufficiency.

The exhibition also showcased a growing range of products that were once entirely imported but are now manufactured locally, reflecting broader efforts to reduce dependency on foreign supplies while creating employment opportunities and strengthening industrial ecosystems.

During his tour, President Tebboune visited several strategic economic pavilions, including that of Sonelgaz International, the international subsidiary of the national energy group, which is expanding its activities across multiple African markets and seeking new investment and partnership opportunities. He also toured the pavilion of the National Subcontracting Committee for the Automotive Industry (AIDA), where ongoing efforts to develop local industrial integration in vehicle manufacturing were presented.

The president further stopped at the pavilion of the Algerian Economic Renewal Council, where discussions focused on private-sector development, entrepreneurship and investment opportunities emerging from Algeria’s ongoing economic reforms.

The exhibition also highlighted the growing diversification of Algeria’s industrial output. Displays featured locally manufactured pharmaceuticals, electrical and electronic appliances, industrial equipment, construction materials, textiles, furniture, food products and consumer goods, illustrating the breadth of sectors targeted under the country’s industrial development strategy.

Officials stressed that the shift from simple production expansion toward economic sovereignty has become a defining feature of Algeria’s current economic policy. This strategy seeks not only to satisfy domestic demand but also to increase non-hydrocarbon exports and integrate Algerian products into regional and international value chains.

The scale of participation at this year’s fair reflects those ambitions. Organisers reported the presence of 781 exhibitors, including 579 Algerian companies and 202 foreign firms representing 36 countries. The diversity of participants spans manufacturing, energy, transport, construction, agribusiness, pharmaceuticals, digital technologies and services, reinforcing the fair’s role as one of the most significant economic events on the national calendar.

Against the backdrop of Algeria’s broader drive to diversify its economy, the 57th Algiers International Fair serves both as a showcase of industrial progress and as a platform for forging new commercial partnerships. Through the event, authorities are seeking to project an image of a country moving beyond dependence on hydrocarbons toward a more diversified economic model built on manufacturing, innovation, investment attraction and export competitiveness.
