OXFORD, United Kingdom — The official launch of the Emir Abdelkader Chair at the University of Oxford on Friday, alongside the inauguration of a dedicated “Algeria Room” within the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, has been widely welcomed by academic, institutional and government representatives as a significant milestone in Algeria’s international academic and cultural outreach.

The initiative, launched during an official Algerian delegation visit to the United Kingdom, is intended to promote the intellectual, humanitarian and civilisational legacy of Emir Abdelkader, the founder of the modern Algerian state and one of the most influential figures in nineteenth-century Islamic thought and statecraft.

Speakers at the ceremony described the project as an important achievement for Algeria’s academic diplomacy, emphasizing its potential to strengthen the country’s visibility within one of the world’s most prestigious centres of higher learning and research.

Several participants paid tribute to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for supporting the initiative throughout its development, noting that the project reflects Algeria’s broader efforts to expand its presence within leading international academic institutions.

Farhan Nizami, Director of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, welcomed the establishment of the chair and expressed appreciation for the support that enabled its creation. He said the initiative would contribute to preserving and promoting Emir Abdelkader’s humanistic legacy through academic research, dialogue and scholarship.

The Rector of Djamaâ El Djazaïr, Cheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani, and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Kamel Baddari also welcomed the launch, describing it as the culmination of a project regarded as strategically important for Algeria’s academic and cultural presence abroad.

They stressed that the new chair would provide Algerian scholars and researchers with a platform within one of the world’s foremost academic institutions, creating new opportunities for research collaboration, intellectual exchange and the promotion of Algerian contributions to global scholarship.

The launch forms part of broader efforts to deepen academic cooperation between Algeria and the United Kingdom, while strengthening partnerships in higher education, scientific research and intercultural dialogue. Officials also highlighted the symbolic importance of the newly inaugurated Algeria Room, which they said reflects Algeria’s growing engagement with international academic networks and reinforces its cultural and scholarly visibility on the global stage.

The Emir Abdelkader Chair is expected to support research, conferences, publications and academic exchanges dedicated to the study of the Emir’s legacy, as well as broader themes related to Islamic thought, governance, ethics and intercultural understanding.
