President Tebboune Denies Requesting Visa Quota from France
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has rejected reports suggesting Algeria sought an annual quota of French visas, stating he had never raised the issue with President Emmanuel Macron. The clarification comes amid continued diplomatic tensions between Algiers and Paris over several bilateral issues.

ALGIERS — Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has categorically denied reports that Algeria requested an annual quota of visas from France, stating that the issue had never been discussed with French President Emmanuel Macron.
The remarks were made during the president’s periodic meeting with representatives of the national media, during which he addressed a range of domestic, regional and international issues. The interview is scheduled to be broadcast later on Monday.
Among the topics discussed was the controversy sparked by recent comments made by French Ambassador to Algeria Stéphane Romatet in an interview with the Algerian news website Tout sur l’Algérie, in which he referred to the possible resumption of issuing 250,000 visas annually to Algerian nationals.
According to excerpts released ahead of the broadcast, President Tebboune firmly rejected suggestions that Algeria had sought such an arrangement.
“I have never requested a visa quota, and I have absolutely never discussed the issue of visas with the French president,” Tebboune said.
The president’s comments come against the backdrop of continuing strains in Algerian-French relations, where visa policy remains one of several sensitive issues shaping bilateral ties.
