Algeria’s Diplomatic Weight Continues to Grow as July 2026 Marks a Month of Strategic Partnerships and Global Influence – Report
A succession of high-level diplomatic engagements, expanded representation in international institutions and deepening strategic partnerships has reinforced Algeria’s international profile, reflecting a foreign policy increasingly centred on regional influence, economic diplomacy and strategic autonomy.

ALGIERS — Algeria has continued to strengthen its diplomatic standing through an increasingly active foreign policy that combines high-level bilateral engagement, growing influence in multilateral institutions and an expanding network of strategic partnerships across Africa, Europe and beyond.
A series of political and diplomatic developments during July illustrated the country’s sustained international engagement and highlighted the increasingly prominent role Algeria is seeking to play in regional and global affairs under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Among the month’s most significant developments were President Tebboune’s official visit to Germany and the subsequent visit to Algiers by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, both of which reaffirmed political dialogue and opened new avenues for economic and strategic cooperation.
At the multilateral level, Algeria also secured a series of notable diplomatic achievements. Ambassador Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, was unanimously elected President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for its 2027 session, reinforcing the country’s growing visibility within the UN system.
Meanwhile, Algeria is set to assume the rotating presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council from Aug. 1, further consolidating its position within continental institutions at a time when security, stability and economic integration remain among Africa’s principal challenges.

The visit of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to Algiers represented one of the clearest illustrations of both governments’ willingness to move beyond previous disagreements and deepen bilateral cooperation.
President Tebboune described the visit as reflecting the shared political determination of both countries to inject fresh momentum into Algerian-Spanish relations and expand cooperation across multiple sectors.
Similar dynamics have characterised Algeria’s relations with Germany and Italy, where political dialogue has increasingly been accompanied by growing economic cooperation, particularly in the energy sector.
These partnerships reflect Algeria’s broader strategy of maintaining constructive relations with European countries while ensuring that cooperation is conducted on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.
Africa at the Centre of Algeria’s Diplomatic Vision
Africa continues to occupy a central place in Algeria’s foreign policy.
Beyond its institutional role within the African Union, Algeria has intensified bilateral engagement with neighbouring countries and sought to strengthen South-South cooperation through expanded political consultation, economic partnerships and technical cooperation.
The country’s forthcoming presidency of the African Union Peace and Security Council comes at a time when security challenges across the Sahel continue to dominate the continental agenda.
Algeria has consistently advocated African-led solutions to African crises while supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening peace, stability and economic integration throughout the continent.
The implementation of projects agreed with Niger and Chad, together with expanding cooperation across West Africa, reflects this broader strategic orientation.
Strategic Autonomy and Balanced International Relations

The country continues to advocate respect for international law, support for the Palestinian cause and the right of the Sahrawi people to self-determination, positions that remain central components of Algerian diplomacy.
