ALGIERS — Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf on Sunday held talks with Senegal’s Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, Cheikh Niang, who is on a working visit to Algeria, to review bilateral relations and discuss ways to strengthen cooperation across a range of strategic sectors.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, the two ministers first held a one-on-one meeting before leading an expanded session involving members of both countries’ delegations.

The talks included a comprehensive assessment of Algerian-Senegalese relations and explored prospects for expanding cooperation in priority sectors, including hydrocarbons, energy, the pharmaceutical industry, finance, higher education, scientific research and vocational training.

The discussions also focused on enhancing bilateral trade by leveraging opportunities offered by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Both sides agreed on the importance of reactivating bilateral cooperation mechanisms to inject fresh momentum into relations, notably by preparing for the next session of the Algerian-Senegalese Joint Commission before the end of the year and relaunching the Algerian-Senegalese Business Council.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange views on regional and international issues of common interest, with particular attention given to developments in the Sahel-Saharan region.
