Algeria’s Water Minister Highlights Smart Management Systems to Modernise Public Water Infrastructure
Water Minister Lounès Bouzegza highlighted the role of digitalisation and smart management systems in improving the operation of water infrastructure, enhancing wastewater treatment services and expanding the reuse of treated water for industrial purposes during a visit to Béchar Province.

BECHAR — Algeria’s Minister of Water Resources, Lounès Bouzegza, highlighted the importance of digitalisation and smart management systems in optimising the operation of the country’s water infrastructure and improving the quality of public wastewater services during a visit to Béchar Province.
During a stop at the Béchar El Djadid wastewater treatment plant, the minister praised the integration of a remote monitoring system that enables real-time supervision of the various stages of the wastewater treatment process, describing it as a practical example of how digital transformation can strengthen the management of public infrastructure and continuously improve services delivered to citizens.
The facility, which has a treatment capacity of 17,000 cubic metres per day, is a key component of Béchar’s sanitation network. Bouzegza toured the plant’s installations, including the analytical laboratory responsible for monitoring the quality of treated water, before receiving a briefing on the current state of the sector, existing infrastructure and plans to further develop wastewater treatment services.
The minister said digitalisation and intelligent management constitute a fundamental pillar for improving the performance of public utilities, ensuring the optimal operation of infrastructure and enhancing the quality of sanitation services. He noted that the approach is intended to strengthen real-time equipment monitoring, improve infrastructure maintenance and optimise the management of available water resources.
The visit also highlighted the strategic importance of promoting the reuse of treated wastewater. Béchar Province is currently implementing a project to supply the Toumiat industrial zone with treated water from the Béchar El Djadid treatment plant through the construction of a 52-kilometre transmission pipeline, providing a sustainable water source for industrial activities.
Bouzegza also stressed the need to ensure the efficient operation of all wastewater treatment plants across the province, particularly the Taghit and Lahmar facilities, by increasing the proportion of treated water reused for authorised applications.
