Sonelgaz Urges Consumers to Reduce Electricity Use During Peak Hours

ALGIERS — Algeria’s state-owned electricity and gas utility Sonelgaz has urged consumers to rationalise electricity consumption during peak demand periods as soaring summer temperatures continue to drive record levels of power usage across the country.
In a statement, Sonelgaz said electricity demand rises significantly during the summer months, particularly during peak hours between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., when simultaneous use of energy-intensive household appliances places increased pressure on the national electricity grid.
The utility attributed the seasonal surge primarily to the widespread operation of high-consumption domestic appliances, especially during periods of extreme heat.
To help manage electricity demand more efficiently, Sonelgaz encouraged households to operate appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, electric water heaters, electric ovens and irons outside peak hours whenever possible.
Where available, consumers are also advised to use the delayed-start function to schedule appliance operation during off-peak periods, helping to distribute electricity demand more evenly throughout the day.
Sonelgaz said these simple energy-saving measures can reduce pressure on the national grid while contributing to the continuity and reliability of electricity supply for all consumers.
The awareness campaign comes as Algeria experiences exceptionally high electricity demand during the summer season, driven largely by elevated temperatures and increased use of air-conditioning and cooling equipment.
