President Tebboune Highlights National Solidarity, European Ties and Institutional Accountability Amid Summer Challenges
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune praised the resilience of Algerian citizens during the country’s wildfire crisis, reaffirmed that Algeria maintains constructive relations with European partners, confirmed the normalization of ties with Spain, and stressed that public officials would be held fully accountable for failures, particularly following the fatal orphanage tragedy.

ALGIERS, Algeria — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to accountability, national solidarity and balanced international partnerships, using his latest televised meeting with representatives of the national media to address a broad range of domestic and foreign policy issues.
The president devoted significant attention to the devastating wildfires that recently affected several regions, commending the collective mobilization of emergency services, security forces and ordinary citizens in combating the blazes and assisting affected communities.
National mobilisation during wildfire emergency
President Tebboune said state authorities remained fully mobilised to contain the fires and provide support to families impacted by the disaster.
He paid tribute to the Civil Protection services, units of the People’s National Army (ANP), Sonelgaz personnel, forestry agents and volunteers who joined relief efforts, describing their commitment as a reflection of Algeria’s strong culture of solidarity.
“Our youth continue to impress through their spirit of volunteerism,” the president said, adding that the solidarity and heroism demonstrated by citizens projected “a positive image of Algeria.”
He noted that exceptionally high summer temperatures had contributed to the increase in wildfires, citing temperatures reaching 47°C in Algiers and 50°C in Tizi Ouzou, while describing such extreme weather events as part of the adverse consequences of climate change.
The president recalled that every wilaya operates under an ORSEC emergency response plan but stressed the need to modernise the country’s disaster-risk management strategy.
He also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen aerial firefighting capabilities, noting that Algeria has already acquired 24 firefighting aircraft and helicopters while continuing to explore additional specialised equipment, including Canadair-type aircraft and adapted C-130 platforms.
Zero tolerance for administrative negligence
Addressing the deadly fire at the Mohammadia orphanage that claimed the lives of children and an educator, President Tebboune reiterated his determination to ensure full accountability.
He confirmed that security services had received firm instructions to conduct a comprehensive investigation establishing responsibility “from the gatekeeper to the highest-ranking official.”
For the president, administrative negligence carrying such grave human consequences cannot go unpunished.
“Failures carry consequences,” he stressed, particularly when they result in the loss of innocent lives.
Relations with Spain back on track
On foreign affairs, President Tebboune described the restoration of relations with Spain as the result of mutual political goodwill.
Reflecting on Spain’s participation as guest of honour at the latest Algiers International Fair (FIA), he said both countries had succeeded in overcoming previous diplomatic misunderstandings.
According to the president, “each side made an effort,” allowing bilateral political, diplomatic and commercial relations to resume their normal course.
He also reiterated Algeria’s longstanding position regarding Western Sahara, expressing confidence that Spain, as the former administering power, would support a settlement consistent with international law through the organisation of a self-determination referendum for the Sahrawi people.
Algeria seeks cooperation, not confrontation
President Tebboune rejected suggestions that Algeria is in conflict with European countries, insisting that Algiers maintains constructive relations based on mutual respect and sovereign equality.
“Algeria is not in conflict with any European country,” he said.
He pointed to strong bilateral ties with Germany, Italy, Poland and Serbia, describing relations with these partners as natural and mutually beneficial.
The president also highlighted growing industrial cooperation with Germany, notably the strategic agreement signed in Berlin in July between Opel and AGM Holding Company to establish local engine manufacturing and automotive production in Algeria.
The project, he said, forms part of broader efforts to deepen Algerian-German industrial cooperation while strengthening the country’s automotive supply chain and manufacturing capacity.
