President Abdelmadjid Tebboune described Algeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign as a positive milestone for national football, praised the Green Falcons’ supporters for projecting a positive image of the country abroad, and announced an invitation to Kansas City officials and 100 American citizens in recognition of their support for the Algerian team.

ALGIERS, Algeria — Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has commended the national football team’s performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the tournament as an encouraging step forward for Algerian football while emphasizing the importance of preserving the current squad and nurturing the country’s emerging generation of football talent.

Speaking during his periodic meeting with representatives of the national media, the President said Algeria’s participation in the tournament reflected the growing competitiveness of the national team, despite its elimination in the Round of 32 by Switzerland.

Tebboune noted that the Greens had delivered an honorable performance on football’s biggest stage after advancing beyond the group phase by finishing among the tournament’s best third-placed teams in a group featuring Argentina, Jordan and Austria.

“There is always an element of luck in football,” the President said, observing that a team may dominate a match and create numerous scoring opportunities yet still lose to a single decisive chance converted by its opponent.

“We have a good team, and it should not be dismantled,” he added, stressing the need to maintain the stability and cohesion of the current squad.

The President revealed that he closely followed every match of the national team throughout the World Cup, describing himself as watching the tournament “with the same anxiety as every Algerian citizen.”

He considered Algeria’s qualification for the knockout stage—only the second such achievement in the country’s World Cup history—to be a significant accomplishment that demonstrates the steady progress of Algerian football on the international stage.

Looking ahead, Tebboune acknowledged the international retirement of several experienced players, including Riyad Mahrez and Aïssa Mandi, describing such transitions as a natural part of football while expressing confidence in the country’s next generation of players.

He stressed that Algeria possesses a promising pool of young talent capable of sustaining the national team’s competitiveness, provided they receive the necessary technical guidance, institutional support and long-term development opportunities.

Beyond the team’s sporting achievements, the President paid tribute to the thousands of Algerian supporters who travelled across the United States, Canada and Mexico to back the national team throughout the tournament.

He praised the supporters for projecting what he described as a civilized and positive image of Algeria before international audiences through their passionate yet respectful support.

According to Tebboune, Algerian fans transformed every host city into a celebration of national identity, displaying the country’s colors and symbols while demonstrating exemplary sportsmanship.

Supporters followed the team throughout its World Cup journey, travelling between Kansas City, San Francisco, and Vancouver despite the considerable financial cost, long travel distances and logistical challenges involved.

Their unwavering presence, the President said, reflected a profound attachment not only to the national team but also to Algeria itself, turning the country’s supporters into unofficial ambassadors throughout the tournament.

In recognition of the hospitality and support shown to the Algerian delegation during its stay in Kansas City, Tebboune announced a special diplomatic initiative aimed at strengthening people-to-people ties between Algeria and the American city.

The President revealed that Algeria would extend official invitations to the Governor and Mayor of Kansas City, together with 100 American citizens, to visit Algeria in appreciation of their solidarity with the national team and their participation in supporting the Algerian flag during the World Cup.

He said the initiative seeks to provide the invited guests with an opportunity to discover Algeria’s diverse regions, cultural heritage and traditions, while reinforcing the role of sport as a bridge for friendship, mutual understanding and international cooperation.

The President described the initiative as a gesture of gratitude toward those who welcomed and encouraged the Algerian team during one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events.

Tebboune concluded that Algeria’s World Cup experience extended beyond football itself, serving as an opportunity to showcase the country’s sporting ambitions, the unity of its people and the positive image projected by Algerians both at home and abroad.
