ALGIERS — Algeria’s state-owned energy company Sonatrach said an overnight incident at its Arzew refinery in western Algeria was brought under control within hours without causing casualties or disrupting production or fuel supplies.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the company said the incident occurred at 2:30 a.m. in the refinery’s 5-litre motor oil packaging unit (Unit 3900), located within the Arzew industrial zone in Oran province.

Sonatrach said emergency response teams activated the Mutual Assistance Plan (PAM) immediately after the incident, mobilising resources from the Arzew Tactical Command Centre in coordination with Algeria’s Civil Protection services.

The situation was fully contained by 4:40 a.m., the company said.

Sonatrach confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were reported and that all necessary technical and operational measures had been initiated to determine the exact cause of the incident.

The company also sought to reassure customers and commercial partners, stating that the event had no impact on refinery operations, with production of fuels and lubricants continuing uninterrupted.

It added that supplies to the domestic market from the Arzew refinery remain unaffected, with production and distribution activities proceeding under normal operating conditions.
