A Record Cereals Harvest Is Expected’: Minister Forecasts Strong Agricultural Output for 2025–2026 Season

Timimoun — Algeria is expecting a record cereals harvest during the 2025–2026 agricultural season, particularly in durum wheat, Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries Minister Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid announced on Thursday from the wilaya of Timimoun.

Launching the national harvest and threshing campaign from the Stah Ougrout agricultural perimeter, Oualid said the current season is projected to deliver “record production across all cereal varieties, especially durum wheat, both in the North and the South of the country.”

The minister highlighted a more than 50% increase in cultivated surface area in Timimoun compared with the previous season, describing it as evidence of the growing expansion of strategic crops in the region.

He also announced the nationwide deployment of around 300 modern large-scale combine harvesters by Agrodiv, aimed at reducing production losses and improving harvesting efficiency in terms of speed and operational performance.

Oualid said the measure forms part of presidential directives to strengthen agricultural mechanisation, bringing the national fleet of combine harvesters to more than 1,200 units, including those managed by the Algerian Interprofessional Cereals Office.

The minister stressed coordination between stakeholders, particularly in training combine operators through vocational education structures and private investors, as part of broader efforts to enhance food security and increase agricultural yields per hectare.

In Timimoun, local agricultural services director Rafik Benmansour estimated this season’s cereal output at around 700,000 quintals over 13,126 hectares, distributed across Ougrout, Tinerkouk and Amguidène production zones.

The region has also been equipped with nine proximity storage centres with a combined capacity of 45,000 tonnes, designed to address previous logistical constraints in grain storage.

Separately, Ahmed Benyoucef, the regional (wilaya) director of Sonelgaz Distribution, confirmed ongoing electrification support for agricultural zones, with full coverage expected by 2027 following the completion of a national interconnection project.

Oualid continued his visit with an inspection of an Algerian–Italian agricultural partnership project in the Amguidène zone.
