Algiers — Kamel Sidi Saïd, adviser to the Algerian president in charge of the General Directorate of Communication, said on Thursday that the death of Algerian artist Abdelmadjid Meskoud represented “a major loss” for Algerian popular music and the country’s broader cultural scene.

Speaking during the funeral ceremony held at El Alia cemetery in Algiers, Sidi Saïd extended condolences to the late artist’s family and to Algeria’s artistic community, praising Meskoud’s longstanding contribution to music, theatre, cinema, radio and television.

He described the late performer as “an exceptional artist” whose body of work left a lasting imprint on Algeria’s cultural memory through productions that resonated across generations.

Sidi Saïd also recalled several of Meskoud’s most emblematic works, notably Ya Dzayer Ya El Aâssima, Ouled El Houma, Belcourt and Mektoub Rabbi, works widely associated with Algerian urban musical heritage and popular cultural expression.

In a separate condolence message, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said he had learned “with profound emotion” of the artist’s death at the age of 73 following a prolonged illness.

Tebboune said the Algerian popular music scene, particularly Algiers’ chaâbi tradition, had lost one of its emblematic figures whose artistic legacy left “an indelible mark” on audiences.

“Through his voice and his art, he long brought joy to a wide public,” the president said, extending condolences and expressions of compassion to the artist’s family and to Algeria’s cultural community.

Meskoud remained particularly known for his contribution to Algerian chaâbi-inspired popular music and for artistic productions reflecting everyday social life and national identity.
