Algiers — Algerian officials on Thursday stressed institutional coordination and strict safeguards on personal data in the electoral process during a meeting at the Constitutional Court focused on the role of state bodies in elections.

Imane Aït Si Maamar, deputy director for compliance at the National Authority for the Protection of Personal Data, said only data strictly necessary for organising elections should be collected, stressing that information exchange between institutions must remain limited, regulated and subject to confidentiality requirements.

She said the circulation of electoral data must comply with legal provisions and remain restricted to authorised institutions involved in the process.

Sofiane Abdelatif Abderrahmani, director of electoral operations and elected officials at the Ministry of the Interior, outlined the preparation of the electoral budget, developed in coordination with the electoral authority and relevant state bodies.

He said the budget covers voter list revisions, issuance of electoral cards, procurement of electoral materials, logistics operations, transport, awareness campaigns, and compensation for staff involved in organising elections, including at diplomatic and consular missions abroad.

Ammar Abbas, member of the Constitutional Court, called for training journalists covering elections, noting that electoral processes require accurate understanding of legal procedures and terminology.

He outlined the stages of legislative elections from the convocation of the electorate to the announcement of provisional results.

Leila Aslaoui, president of the Constitutional Court, said the media plays a key intermediary role between citizens, candidates and elected officials, stressing the need for institutional coordination and respect for the prerogatives of each body involved in the electoral process.
