Algeria to Gradually Expand “History of Algeria” and Citizenship Modules Across Higher Education Institutions

— By Dr. Hana Saada

Algiers — Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Kamel Baddari announced Thursday the gradual nationwide rollout of two academic modules, “History of Algeria” and “Nationalism and Citizenship,” across major higher education institutions.

Responding to questions during a plenary session at the People’s National Assembly, Baddari said the initiative aims to strengthen students’ national awareness and reinforce civic and patriotic values within Algeria’s higher education system.

He stressed that Algeria has an increasing need to preserve its identity references and foundational values in the face of rapid technological and informational transformations.

The minister underlined that history plays a central role in shaping societies, describing it as a key pillar for building patriotism, understanding the past, analysing the present and preparing the future.

According to the ministry, the approach began during the 2025–2026 academic year with a gradual introduction of the two modules within schools under the Sidi Abdellah university hub, which hosts high-achieving students in technological fields.

The programme will be progressively extended to all higher education institutions as transversal modules aimed at promoting civic spirit, national consciousness and attachment to Algeria’s identity.
