Algerian Army Foils Attempted Smuggling of More Than 2.5 Quintals of Cannabis From Moroccan Border

Algiers —Combined units of the People’s National Army, operating in coordination with security services, thwarted attempts to smuggle more than 2.5 quintals of processed cannabis into Algeria from the Moroccan border between May 6 and May 12, according to an operational assessment released by the Ministry of National Defence.
The army said security forces arrested 56 suspected narcotics traffickers and seized 252 kilograms of processed cannabis originating from Morocco, in addition to 3.2 kilograms of cocaine and 1,473,878 psychotropic tablets during operations conducted across multiple military regions.
Within the framework of counterterrorism operations, army detachments also arrested 11 individuals accused of supporting terrorist groups in separate nationwide operations.
In southern regions including Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Illizi and In Salah, army units arrested 124 individuals and seized 33 vehicles, 122 generators, 99 jackhammers, quantities of raw gold and stones, as well as equipment used in illegal gold-mining activities.
Authorities further reported the arrest of 12 additional suspects and the seizure of two submachine guns, one automatic pistol, nine hunting rifles, 60,275 litres of fuel and 15 tonnes of food products intended for smuggling operations.
Separately, the Coast Guard foiled attempted illegal migration operations along Algeria’s coastline and rescued 46 individuals aboard makeshift boats, while security services arrested 251 irregular migrants of various nationalities across the country, the statement added.
