Algeria Advances National Water Security with New Seawater Desalination Plants

The event, held at the headquarters of the Sonatrach Group, also marked the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Algerian Water Desalination Company, a Sonatrach subsidiary, and the national water authority.
According to an official ministry statement, these initiatives align with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to strengthen sustainable water supply systems and ensure consistent access to potable water. The ceremony witnessed the presence of Minister of Water Resources, Tahar Derbal, alongside key officials from Sonatrach and the national institutions tasked with project implementation.
These projects constitute the first phase of the Second National Complementary Program, approved by the President, targeting the establishment of six major desalination plants, each designed with a production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day. Upon completion, these initiatives are projected to elevate Algeriaโs national desalinated water production capacity to 5.6 million cubic meters per day by 2030.
The awarded contracts encompass the Ain Ajaroud plant in Tlemcen, the Dahra plant in Chlef, and the Sidi Lejal plant in Mostaganem, executed under the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) framework. The timeline for completion is set at 22 months, with oversight entrusted to the Algerian Water Desalination Company, while specialized national enterprises undertake the construction works.
