Algeria Confirms Watermelon Safety After Laboratory Tests, Warns Against Misinformation

Authorities say nationwide laboratory analyses found no health risks in locally produced watermelons, rejecting social media claims as unfounded and warning of legal action against the dissemination of false information deemed harmful to public confidence and the agricultural sector.

ALGIERS — Algerian authorities have confirmed that laboratory testing found locally produced watermelons to be safe for consumption, rejecting widely circulated social media claims alleging excessive nitrate levels and potential health risks, while warning of possible legal action against those responsible for spreading what officials described as false information.

In a statement issued jointly by the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities and Transport, in coordination with the ministries of Commerce and Agriculture, authorities said laboratory analyses conducted over the course of a week found no evidence supporting the allegations circulated online.

According to the statement, samples collected from major production areas and wholesale markets across the country were analysed by the Algerian Centre for Quality Control and Packaging (CACQE). The tests detected no pathogenic bacteria, while nitrate concentrations remained well within internationally accepted safety thresholds.

The ministries said the findings categorically refute claims questioning the suitability of watermelons for consumption, describing the reports circulating on social media as unfounded.

Officials argued that the dissemination of such information risks undermining consumer confidence, damaging agricultural producers and affecting Algeria’s broader agri-food sector at a time when the country is seeking to expand agricultural exports to international markets.

Reaffirming that the protection of public health remains a state priority, the ministries urged citizens to rely on official sources for information relating to food safety and public health rather than unverified content circulating on digital platforms.

The statement forms part of the government’s broader efforts to counter misinformation affecting strategic sectors, including agriculture and food security, while maintaining public confidence in national food safety oversight and regulatory institutions.
