Algeria Positions African University Theatre Festival as Reflection of Shared Cultural and Liberation Legacy

Higher Education Minister Kamel Baddari says the inaugural festival reflects Algeria’s historical support for African liberation movements while promoting cultural exchange and youth engagement across the continent.

ALGIERS — Algeria’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamel Baddari, said on Monday that the inaugural Algerian African University Theatre Festival reflects the country’s longstanding cultural and historical ties with Africa, describing the event as a continuation of a shared legacy of artistic expression and anti-colonial struggle.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the festival, which runs until July 23, Baddari said the event was “not merely an artistic gathering” but a natural extension of a rich cultural and liberation heritage shaped by generations of artists and activists who used theatre and the arts to express the causes of freedom, identity and emancipation.

The ceremony was attended by Secretary of State for African Affairs Selma Bakhta Mansouri, Director General for Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Boualem Chebihi, as well as ambassadors and members of the accredited diplomatic corps in Algeria.

Highlighting Algeria’s historical relationship with the African continent, Baddari referred to the words of African independence leader Amílcar Cabral, who famously described Algeria as the “Mecca of revolutionaries,” recalling the country’s role in supporting African liberation movements during the colonial era.

Addressing the participating students, the minister described African youth as the “beating heart of Africa” and said university theatre students taking part in the festival represented the natural successors of the generation of artists who helped shape the continent’s modern identity.

Baddari also outlined Algeria’s broader vision for cooperation with African partners, stating that the country’s higher education strategy—built around universities that generate knowledge, promote scientific research and contribute to wealth creation—aims to support sustainable development and help address the challenges facing African societies.
