ALGIERS — Amid the nationwide celebration of the 2026 baccalaureate results, one success story has resonated far beyond examination statistics. In Algeria’s southwestern wilaya of El Bayadh, Abdelli Abdellah emerged as the province’s highest-performing student after obtaining an average score of 18.69/20 in civil engineering, overcoming living conditions that would have discouraged many others.
His achievement is remarkable not only for its academic excellence but also for the circumstances under which it was earned.
Abdelli, a student at Maamar El Arabi Secondary School in the municipality of El Maharra, lives with his family in a tent located approximately 15 kilometres from his school. Throughout the academic year, he prepared for one of Algeria’s most demanding national examinations while facing extreme summer temperatures, sandstorms and the absence of many of the basic conditions commonly associated with a conducive learning environment.
Yet those challenges became neither an excuse nor a limitation.
A story of perseverance beyond circumstances
Despite difficult living conditions and a demanding daily commute, Abdelli maintained the discipline and determination required to excel academically, ultimately securing the highest baccalaureate score in El Bayadh.
His success illustrates a recurring reality seen across Algeria each examination season: outstanding academic performance is often driven less by material comfort than by perseverance, commitment and the determination to pursue education despite adversity.
For many observers, Abdelli’s achievement stands as a reminder that talent can emerge from the most modest circumstances when supported by resilience and an unwavering commitment to learning.
As stories of exceptional baccalaureate graduates continue to emerge across the country, Abdelli’s journey has become one of the most inspiring examples of this year’s examination session—demonstrating that determination can overcome environmental and social obstacles, and that educational excellence is not defined by where a student begins, but by the resolve with which they pursue their ambitions.
