Algeria, Germany deepen energy alliance with focus on gas decarbonisation and green hydrogen
By Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Algeria and Germany moved to accelerate their strategic energy partnership during high-level talks in Algiers on Monday centred on natural gas cooperation, methane-emissions reduction and the development of green hydrogen transport infrastructure.
The discussions were led by Algeria’s Energy Ministry Secretary-General Miloud Medjelled and a German delegation headed by Oliver Rentschler, accompanied by senior officials from Germany’s foreign affairs and economy ministries, as well as representatives of major industrial and energy groups including Bosch, Siemens and VNG.
Both sides reviewed progress on joint projects tied to gas commercialisation, low-carbon technologies in the gas industry and the development of green hydrogen transport corridors through bilateral expert working groups.
The talks also focused on the advancement of the TaqatHy+ programme, particularly measures aimed at reducing methane emissions and limiting gas flaring, as Algeria seeks to align its energy sector with international climate commitments while expanding technological innovation and local expertise.
Algerian officials stressed the importance of intensifying scientific and technical exchanges and called for the launch of new industrial projects involving advanced technologies, equipment manufacturing and localisation across the oil and gas value chain, alongside enhanced workforce training and capacity-building.
The two countries reaffirmed their commitment to long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships centred on technology transfer, production know-how, industrial integration and sustainable energy solutions supporting the broader energy transition.
