By Dr. Hana Saada
ANKARA — The Algeria–Turkey parliamentary friendship group held a series of high-level meetings on Monday at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, focusing on bilateral relations, regional issues and parliamentary cooperation.
The delegation from the People’s National Assembly of Algeria began its programme with a visit to the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk before proceeding to the Turkish parliament for talks with the Turkey–Algeria friendship group led by its president Abdulkadir Özel.
The two sides reviewed the historical ties between Algeria and Turkey and discussed ways to strengthen cooperation across multiple sectors, with particular emphasis on economic relations and parliamentary diplomacy. They also welcomed recent momentum in bilateral relations following the state visit of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Turkey and the holding of the first High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council session.
The delegation later held discussions with the Turkish parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee chaired by Fuat Oktay, addressing regional and international developments of mutual concern.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to the Palestinian cause, supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.
Talks also covered the situations in the Middle East, the Sahel and Libya, with the Algerian side reiterating its position in favour of peaceful settlement of conflicts, respect for state sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs, alongside support for the right of peoples to self-determination, including the Sahrawi people.
The Algerian delegation was led by Messaoud Guesri, president of the friendship group, and included Ahmed Sadok, Mohamed Mechegueg, Fatah Djanati and Samira Barhoum.
The programme concluded with a meeting with Turkish Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, who welcomed the outcomes of recent bilateral parliamentary exchanges and Algeria’s participation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union assembly in Istanbul.
