Lourenço: Algeria and Angola can significantly contribute to Africa’s development

By Dr. Hana Saada

ALGIERS — Angola’s President João Lourenço stated on Monday that Algeria and Angola can make a significant contribution to Africa’s development, particularly in energy, industry and infrastructure.

In a joint press statement with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during his state visit to Algiers, João Lourenço stressed that both countries are keen to explore all available opportunities, adding that their partnership could support not only national development but also broader continental progress.

Lourenço underlined that discussions with Tebboune covered multiple areas of cooperation and resulted in the signing of 11 agreements that, in his words, “will guide our path towards the future.”

He highlighted the historical depth of relations between the two countries, rooted in shared liberation struggles against colonialism and underdevelopment.

The Angolan president noted Algeria’s contribution to the training of early Angolan energy engineers, many of whom continue to work within Sonangol, including at senior levels.

Both sides agreed on the need to accelerate the convening of the fifth session of the bilateral joint commission to strengthen coordination mechanisms.

Lourenço extended an invitation to President Tebboune to visit Angola.
