ALGIERS — Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb on Saturday honoured members of the country’s security services for distinguished operational achievements in combating drug trafficking during a national ceremony marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The event, held at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Centre in Algiers under the patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, formed part of the first anniversary of Algeria’s National Strategy to Combat Drugs and Psychotropic Substances and was organised under the theme: “One Year After the Launch of the National Strategy, Together We Rise to the Challenge.”

Among those recognised were Lieutenant Colonel Khenfoussi Laala, representing the National Gendarmerie under the Ministry of National Defence, Police Controller Aknouche Madjid of the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), and Customs Officer Chouiref Abdelouahab of the General Directorate of Customs. Each received honours for leading the most significant qualitative anti-drug operations conducted by their respective institutions.

The ceremony brought together senior state officials, including President of the Council of the Nation Azouz Nasri, President of the Constitutional Court Leïla Aslaoui, members of the government, heads of national institutions, security officials and representatives of civil society organisations.

During the event, Director-General of the National Office for the Fight Against Drugs and Drug Addiction (ONLCDT), Tarek Kour, presented an implementation progress report on the National Strategy to Combat Drugs and Psychotropic Substances to Justice Minister Lotfi Boudjemaa.

Participants also viewed a documentary highlighting major operations and initiatives carried out since the strategy’s launch last year, illustrating Algeria’s efforts to strengthen prevention, law enforcement coordination and institutional responses to organised narcotics trafficking.

The commemorative programme additionally featured the issuance of a special series of postage stamps marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, underscoring the authorities’ broader public awareness campaign alongside operational and legislative measures.
