By Dr. Hana Saada
OXFORD — Algeria’s Minister of State, Rector of Djamaâ El Djazaïr, Sheikh Mohamed Maâmoun Al Kacimi Al Hassani, and Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Kamel Baddari are undertaking an official visit to the United Kingdom to oversee the inauguration of the Emir Abdelkader Chair at the Centre for Islamic Studies, University of Oxford.
The visit, carried out under instructions from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, marks a new step in strengthening Algeria’s academic and cultural presence within leading international institutions.
According to a statement from the rectorate of Djamaâ El Djazaïr, the initiative aims to promote the intellectual, humanitarian and civilizational legacy of Emir Abdelkader, while highlighting his contributions to statecraft, knowledge production and intercultural dialogue.
As part of the programme, the delegation will also inaugurate the “Algeria Room” within the prestigious Oxford-based centre, an institutional space intended to reflect Algeria’s academic and cultural footprint and reinforce its visibility in global scholarly environments.
The Emir Abdelkader Chair is expected to serve as a major academic platform for research and dialogue on issues related to Islamic thought, intercultural exchange, and the historical legacy of one of Algeria’s most prominent national figures.
The project also forms part of broader efforts to deepen scientific and academic cooperation between Algeria and the United Kingdom, particularly in higher education, research and innovation, and to expand institutional partnerships between universities and research centres in both countries.
A scientific and academic programme will accompany the inauguration ceremonies, bringing together Algerian and British scholars to explore the intellectual heritage of Emir Abdelkader and discuss future avenues of cooperation in higher education and research.
The initiative underscores Algeria’s strategy to strengthen its international academic diplomacy and consolidate its presence within global centres of knowledge production.
