Algeria, Vietnam Deepen Strategic Cooperation Across Agriculture, Industry and Higher Education
By Dr. Hana Saada
SKIKDA — Algeria and Vietnam are seeking to broaden a longstanding strategic partnership rooted in decades of anti-colonial solidarity, with renewed efforts focused on expanding cooperation in agriculture, industry, renewable energy, fisheries and higher education.
The latest phase of bilateral engagement was highlighted during a working visit to Skikda by Vietnamese Ambassador to Algeria Tran Quoc Khanh, who held discussions with local authorities aimed at identifying new avenues for economic, scientific and institutional cooperation between the two countries.
During meetings with Skikda Governor Saïd Akhrouf, Algerian officials underscored the province’s growing role as one of the country’s leading industrial hubs, particularly in petrochemicals, energy and emerging green hydrogen projects targeting European markets. Local authorities also expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with Vietnam in sectors where the Southeast Asian nation has developed internationally recognised expertise.
The discussions reflected Algeria’s broader strategy of diversifying its economic partnerships and expanding engagement with emerging economies across the Global South. Vietnam, which has established itself as one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies, is increasingly viewed as a valuable partner in supporting Algeria’s economic transformation and development objectives.
Trade and investment opportunities featured prominently in the talks. Current commercial exchanges are centred on Vietnamese exports of robusta coffee, pepper, cashew nuts, textiles and steel products, while Algeria exports agricultural goods, including dates, alongside a range of industrial inputs.
The renewed momentum builds on a relationship dating back to Algeria’s independence in 1962. Over the decades, Algiers and Hanoi have maintained close political ties shaped by shared experiences of national liberation and reinforced through cooperation within the Non-Aligned Movement, making the partnership a longstanding example of South-South cooperation.
Higher education and scientific research also emerged as key areas for future collaboration. Discussions explored the possibility of expanding partnerships between the University of Skikda and Vietnamese academic institutions through student mobility programmes, joint research initiatives and specialised training opportunities.
The visit underscored a broader convergence of interests between the two countries as they seek to translate historical solidarity into practical economic and institutional cooperation. For Algeria, the strengthening of ties with Vietnam aligns with a wider diplomatic and economic orientation aimed at building balanced partnerships with emerging powers, deepening South-South cooperation and advancing mutually beneficial development objectives.
