Algeria Marks Independence Anniversary as Tebboune Reaffirms Commitment to National Memory, Democratic Reform and Emerging-Economy Ambitions

ALGIERS, July 5 — Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune marked the 64th anniversary of the country’s Independence and National Sovereignty Day with a sweeping address celebrating Algeria’s anti-colonial struggle, paying tribute to the sacrifices of generations of freedom fighters, and reaffirming his government’s commitment to democratic consolidation, sustainable development and the country’s ambition to join the ranks of emerging economies.

In a message issued on the occasion of the national holiday, Tebboune portrayed Algeria’s independence as the culmination of decades of resistance against colonial rule, describing the liberation struggle as one of the defining chapters in modern history and a lasting source of national identity.

Opening his address with references to Islamic tradition, the president said July 5 remains a day of immense pride for Algerians, commemorating the moment when the nation reclaimed its sovereignty after decades of resistance, sacrifice and revolutionary struggle.

He recalled that the victory of independence crowned more than seventy-five years of resistance to colonial occupation, beginning with the earliest popular uprisings and continuing through the political activism of the pioneers of the national movement before reaching its decisive phase with the outbreak of the November 1954 Revolution.

According to President Tebboune, the generation that launched the War of National Liberation made an irreversible choice in favour of freedom despite overwhelming odds, mobilising fighters from every region of Algeria to mountains, deserts, forests and rural strongholds in pursuit of national liberation.

The president stressed that the price of independence was exceptionally high, stating that Algeria sacrificed 5,630,000 martyrs, whose commitment and willingness to embrace martyrdom permanently shaped the country’s identity and collective consciousness.

Revolution remembered as an enduring symbol of sacrifice

President Tebboune described the Algerian Revolution as one of history’s great epics, saying its legacy continues to inspire future generations through its examples of courage, resilience and self-sacrifice.

He recalled the suffering endured by Algerians during more than seven years of armed conflict, saying the population confronted  a settler-colonial system marked by brutality, scorched-earth policies, collective punishment and widespread destruction.

Despite those hardships, he said, Algerians remained steadfast through patience, faith and determination, ultimately securing national independence while preserving the country’s dignity.

The president argued that the Revolution occupies a unique place in world history because of both the scale of sacrifices made and the enduring principles it established, presenting it as an expression of a people deeply attached to honour, sovereignty and national dignity.

National memory presented as foundation of the New Algeria

Reflecting on the anniversary, Tebboune said preserving Algeria’s national memory remains a sacred responsibility owed to resistance fighters, leaders of the National Movement and the martyrs of the Liberation Revolution.

He said the legacy transmitted by previous generations continues to guide contemporary Algeria through unwavering loyalty to the November Declaration and the values embodied by the country’s martyrs.

According to the president, the foundations of what he described as the “New Algeria” derive their legitimacy from that historical continuity, arguing that ongoing national reforms draw strength from fidelity to the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle.

Confidence in economic transformation

Turning to current national priorities, President Tebboune expressed confidence in Algeria’s future, saying the country possesses the political determination and popular support necessary to sustain reform and accelerate comprehensive, sustainable development.

He said Algeria’s sovereign policy choices and recent achievements provide a solid basis for continued economic transformation, adding that the country is progressing toward joining the ranks of emerging economies in the near future.

The president described the current period as strategically significant, requiring continued national cohesion and sustained efforts to strengthen development across multiple sectors.

Democratic process highlighted

Tebboune also linked the Independence Day celebrations with another important constitutional milestone in Algeria’s democratic development.

He praised the organisation of the legislative elections held two days earlier, commending the efforts undertaken by public institutions and stakeholders to ensure the successful conduct of the vote.

The president said the electoral campaign had provided conditions for fair democratic competition while allowing citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote in an atmosphere of calm and security.

Tribute to veterans and national unity

Concluding his message, Tebboune extended his congratulations to Algerians at home and abroad, while paying tribute to female and male veterans of the War of National Liberation.

He expressed profound respect for the country’s former freedom fighters and honoured the memory of Algeria’s martyrs, reaffirming that their sacrifices remain the cornerstone of the Republic’s identity and future aspirations.

The president concluded his address by renewing his call for national unity, proclaiming “Long live Algeria” and offering eternal glory to the nation’s martyrs.
