ALGIERS — Algeria’s National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) announced on Thursday evening that the preliminary voter turnout in the country’s legislative elections reached 20.79% following the closure of polling stations nationwide.
Speaking after voting concluded at 8:00 p.m. local time, Karim Khelfane, acting president of ANIE, said that 4,962,433 voters had cast ballots from a national electoral roll comprising 23,872,756 registered voters within Algeria.
The electoral authority also reported that voter participation among the Algerian diaspora reached 10.67%, following advance voting conducted through Algeria’s diplomatic and consular missions abroad.
The legislative elections were held to elect the 407 members of the People’s National Assembly (APN), with more than 24.7 million Algerians, including citizens residing overseas, eligible to participate in the nationwide ballot.
ANIE will now proceed with the consolidation of vote-counting reports submitted by electoral commissions across the country before transmitting the provisional results to the Constitutional Court, which is responsible for examining any electoral appeals and officially proclaiming the final results, including the allocation of parliamentary seats by electoral constituency, in accordance with Algeria’s electoral legislation.
