Vote Counting Begins Across Algeria Following Closure of Polling Stations in Legislative Elections

BY Dr. Hana Saada

ALGIERS — Vote counting began across Algeria on Thursday evening after polling stations closed nationwide following the completion of legislative elections to elect members of the People’s National Assembly (APN).

Earlier in the day, the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) announced that voting hours would be extended until 8:00 p.m. local time, one hour beyond the initially scheduled closing time, in all electoral constituencies across the country.

According to the electoral authority, the decision was taken in response to requests submitted by provincial electoral coordinators, with the extension intended to facilitate voter participation before the commencement of ballot counting.

More than 24.7 million registered voters were eligible to participate in the election, with polling taking place across 13,664 voting centres and 63,385 polling stations nationwide, in addition to voting facilities serving the Algerian diaspora abroad.

Following the closure of polling stations, electoral officials initiated the counting process in the presence of representatives of the competing electoral lists, in accordance with Algeria’s electoral legislation. The National Independent Authority for Elections is expected to centralise the results before announcing the provisional outcome within 48 hours, after which the Constitutional Court will examine any appeals and proclaim the final official results.
