Algeria’s Communication Minister Casts Ballot, Says Strong Institutions Are the Foundation of the “New Algeria”
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Algeria’s Minister of Communication, Zoheir Bouamama, cast his ballot on Thursday in the country’s legislative elections, describing parliamentary representation as a fundamental democratic responsibility and reaffirming that the “New Algeria” is being built upon strong state institutions.
Bouamama voted at Ahmed Aroua Primary School in Bouchaoui, west of Algiers, as millions of Algerians headed to polling stations across the country to elect the 407 members of the People’s National Assembly (APN) for a new five-year legislative term.
The nationwide vote is being conducted under the supervision of the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) and involves more than 24.7 million registered voters, including 854,285 Algerian nationals residing abroad. A total of 793 electoral lists comprising 9,854 candidates are competing for seats in the next parliament.
Speaking to reporters after casting his vote, Bouamama said that representing citizens and translating their aspirations into legislative action constituted a “noble mission,” adding that the country’s institutional development remains central to Algeria’s ongoing reform process.
“The New Algeria is one built upon strong institutions,” the minister said, stressing the importance of an effective parliament in supporting governance, public accountability and national development.
Bouamama also paid tribute to the national media for their role in covering the legislative elections, commending journalists and media organisations for ensuring broad public access to information throughout the electoral process.
The legislative elections are being held under the official slogan, “Be an active partner in decision-making… Vote and participate,” as Algeria seeks to consolidate institutional reforms and strengthen representative governance through the renewal of the country’s legislative assembly.
