Algerian Football Federation Pays Tribute to Riyad Mahrez Following International Retirement
ALGIERS — The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) paid an emotional tribute to Riyad Mahrez after the long-serving captain announced his retirement from international football, hailing him as an enduring symbol of Algerian football following more than a decade of service to the national team.
In a message published across its official digital platforms, the federation expressed its gratitude to the 35-year-old winger, writing: “Thank you, Captain. You will forever remain a legend.” The statement honoured Mahrez’s contribution to Algerian football and acknowledged the legacy he leaves after years of leadership and success in the national colours.
Mahrez confirmed the end of his international career shortly after Algeria’s 2–0 defeat to Switzerland in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a result that brought the Desert Foxes’ campaign to an end.
Played at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, the match saw Breel Embolo give Switzerland an early lead in the 10th minute before Dan Ndoye doubled the advantage shortly after the restart, securing Switzerland’s progression to the next stage of the tournament while eliminating Algeria.
The World Cup exit also marked the conclusion of Mahrez’s international journey, ending one of the most distinguished careers in Algerian football history. Over more than twelve years with the national team, the winger established himself as one of Algeria’s most influential players, captaining the country to its historic triumph at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations and becoming one of the nation’s most-capped footballers.
The federation’s tribute reflected the widespread recognition of Mahrez’s role in shaping a generation of Algerian football, with his achievements and leadership ensuring his place among the country’s greatest sporting figures. His retirement closes a defining chapter for the national team while leaving a legacy expected to inspire future generations of Algerian footballers.
