Algerian First Lady Casts Ballot in Legislative Elections
BY Dr. Hana Saada
ALGIERS — Algeria’s First Lady, the spouse of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, cast her ballot on Thursday at Ahmed Aroua Primary School in Bouchaoui, west of Algiers, during legislative elections to elect the 407 members of the People’s National Assembly (APN) for a new five-year term.
The nationwide vote, organised under the supervision of the National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE), is open to more than 24.7 million registered voters, including approximately 854,285 Algerian nationals residing abroad. A total of 793 electoral lists comprising 9,854 candidates are competing for seats in the lower house of parliament.
Polling stations opened at 8:00 a.m. across the country and, following requests submitted by provincial electoral coordinators, ANIE extended voting hours until 8:00 p.m., one hour beyond the initially scheduled closing time.
The legislative elections are being held under the official slogan, “Be an Active Partner in Decision-Making… Vote and Participate,” and form part of Algeria’s ongoing institutional renewal process aimed at strengthening representative governance and renewing the composition of the national legislature.
Following the closure of polling stations nationwide, electoral officials immediately began the ballot-counting process in accordance with Algeria’s electoral legislation. Vote counting is being conducted in the presence of representatives of the competing electoral lists to ensure the transparency and integrity of the process.
ANIE is expected to centralise the results before announcing the provisional outcome within 48 hours of receiving the official vote-counting reports. The results will subsequently be referred to the Constitutional Court, which will examine any appeals before proclaiming the final official results within the legally prescribed timeframe.
