President Tebboune Leads Algeria’s Firm Response to Secure Justice for Wassim, the Child Victim of a Moroccan Assault in Boston

By Maamar Gani

When the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, personally intervenes to address the brutal physical assault of a fourteen-year-old child thousands of miles away in Boston, the political and diplomatic message extends far beyond humanitarian concern. It embodies a deeply rooted Algerian doctrine of sovereignty: an Algerian citizen is a red line, and the protection of the state follows him wherever he may be.

This attention at the highest level did not end with expressions of condemnation. It was immediately translated into decisive action. Algeria’s veteran ambassador to the United States, Sabri Boukadoum, together with the Minister of Sports, who is currently present in the country, has been leading intensive diplomatic and legal efforts to monitor every aspect of the case.

Algeria is not responding with emotion alone. It has seized the legal initiative by pursuing the perpetrators of this brutal and barbaric assault—committed by Moroccan nationals on American soil—through the full force of the U.S. justice system. Because the victim also holds American citizenship, the thirty-five suspects now face an array of criminal charges whose penalties could reach twenty-five years of imprisonment.

Yet beyond the legal proceedings, what happened to the young Wassim in Boston once again sounds the alarm over the kind of individual produced by the machinery of ideological indoctrination and blind hatred fostered by Morocco’s ruling establishment. This was not an isolated act of violence. It was the moment when years of systematic anti-Algerian incitement emerging from the corridors of Rabat were transformed into a savage physical assault.

The fact that some Moroccan supporters reached the point of boasting about beating an unarmed minor simply because he wore the jersey of the Algerian national football team—and that this reprehensible act was openly celebrated across social media platforms—reveals the depth of the moral bankruptcy and ethical decay into which they have fallen. Sporting disappointment and political failure have been converted into blind hatred directed at an innocent child.

Through its comprehensive legal response, the Algerian state has once again demonstrated the conduct of a strong and responsible nation. Pursuing those responsible through the official judicial institutions of the United States represents the most effective means of ensuring accountability, containing an extremely dangerous situation before it escalates further, and preventing the recurrence of such barbaric attacks against Algeria’s national symbols.

Today, as the suspects prepare to confront their fate before the American courts, the prayers of all Algerians are with the young Wassim, wishing him a full and speedy recovery. They hope to see him once again, proudly wearing the Algerian jersey from the stands as he watches the national team face Switzerland, proving to Morocco’s establishment and its supporters that while the wounds inflicted by treachery may heal, the disgrace of attacking a defenceless child will remain etched forever—in the records of justice, on the fields of sport, and in the judgment of history.
