ALGIERS — Algeria will begin preparations for a sister-city agreement between the coastal city of Tipaza and Kansas City in the United States after President Abdelmadjid Tebboune instructed the government to launch the initiative during the latest meeting of the Council of Ministers, according to a statement issued by the Presidency.
The statement said Tebboune instructed the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with the Minister of Interior and the Minister of Sports, to initiate the procedures necessary to prepare a twinning agreement between the two cities.
The proposal was discussed as part of the Council of Ministers’ review of Algeria–United States relations and reflects efforts to expand bilateral engagement through cooperation at both the national and local levels.
World Cup ties pave the way for municipal partnership
According to the Presidency, the initiative follows the reception extended to the Algerian national football team during its stay in Kansas City throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The statement said the delegation received a warm welcome from local authorities and residents, while Algerian supporters drew attention with their large presence, filling parts of the city with national flags and celebrations during the tournament.
The Presidency said the positive interaction between the Algerian delegation, local officials and the host community helped strengthen ties between the two sides, prompting authorities to pursue a formal sister-city partnership between Tipaza and Kansas City.
If concluded, the agreement is expected to provide a framework for cooperation across areas including culture, education, sports and local development, while encouraging exchanges between institutions and civil society in both cities.
The initiative also comes as Algeria and the United States continue to deepen bilateral cooperation across a range of sectors, including the economy, investment, culture and sports.
