Algeria Moves to Fast-Track Niger and Chad Projects as Tebboune Deepens Regional Development Strategy

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune instructs the government to fast-track joint projects with Niger and Chad, prioritising electricity generation, infrastructure and economic cooperation, while establishing an inter-ministerial mechanism to oversee implementation as Algeria deepens its regional development strategy.

ALGIERS — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has instructed the Algerian government to accelerate the implementation of cooperation agreements concluded with Niger and Chad, reaffirming Algeria’s commitment to transforming bilateral partnerships into tangible development projects and strengthening regional economic integration through strategic investments.

The directive was issued during Sunday’s Council of Ministers meeting, where the implementation of bilateral cooperation agreements with the two neighbouring countries featured among the key items on the government’s agenda, according to a statement released by the Presidency.

Addressing ministers, Tebboune underscored the “highest importance” Algeria attaches to the rapid execution of the projects agreed with both countries, particularly those aimed at expanding electricity generation and improving access to energy for citizens in Niger and Chad.

According to the presidential statement, the president stressed that the projects should be implemented “as soon as possible,” reflecting Algeria’s determination to move beyond the signing of agreements towards their effective execution on the ground.

The Presidency said the President’s instructions are rooted in “a shared will to cooperate in establishing a solid economic foundation capable of generating sustainable development and real investment that serves the common interests of Algeria, Niger, Chad and the region as a whole within an integrated vision.”

The projects form part of Algeria’s broader policy of strengthening economic partnerships across Africa by combining technical expertise, infrastructure development and long-term investment to support regional growth and stability.

To ensure the timely implementation of the agreements, Tebboune tasked the Minister of State and Minister of Foreign Affairs with supervising an inter-ministerial committee responsible for monitoring progress across sectors and coordinating the execution of the various cooperation projects within the agreed deadlines.

The committee will oversee implementation on the ground and ensure that commitments reached during high-level consultations between the leaders of Algeria, Niger and Chad are translated into operational programmes and measurable results.

The latest directive builds on Algeria’s expanding economic engagement across the African continent, where state-owned companies have increasingly participated in strategic infrastructure and public utility projects.

In recent years, Algerian public enterprises—including Sonelgaz, Sonatrach and Naftal—have deployed technical expertise in several African countries, supporting projects in electricity generation, energy infrastructure and fuel distribution as part of Algeria’s broader strategy to promote regional cooperation.

Beyond the energy sector, Algeria has also sought to expand cooperation with African partners in strategic industries, including pharmaceuticals and industrial development, while encouraging greater economic integration through bilateral partnerships alongside continental initiatives.

The renewed emphasis on implementation signals Algiers’ intention to consolidate its role as a regional development partner by ensuring that cooperation agreements evolve from diplomatic commitments into concrete projects capable of supporting economic growth, improving public services and reinforcing long-term regional connectivity.

The Council of Ministers’ discussions reflect Algeria’s continuing efforts to position economic cooperation as a central pillar of its regional diplomacy, with the implementation of strategic projects viewed as a key instrument for advancing shared development objectives with neighbouring African states.
