Algeria Pushes Automotive Industrialisation as Ghrieb Launches Plastics Plant in Tissemsilt
BY Dr. Hana Saada
Algeria is accelerating efforts to build a domestic automotive supply chain through new industrial projects aimed at boosting local content and reducing reliance on imports.
Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb launched on Wednesday a plastics components production unit, General Plastic Injection (GPI), in Khemisti in Tissemsilt province, during a working visit ordered by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The plant will manufacture plastic parts for the automotive industry using modern industrial technologies, and is scheduled to enter production in September 2026. It is part of a broader programme to reintegrate confiscated assets into the productive economy and convert them into industrial and employment-generating projects.
Ghrieb said the project would give “new momentum” to Algeria’s automotive sector by strengthening local manufacturing capacity and increasing value addition in components production. He added that the initiative also forms part of a wider regional development plan for Tissemsilt.
Accompanied by the interior and industry ministers, he said Algeria is moving toward a structured industrial model aimed at reducing dependence on assembly-based activity and developing a genuine manufacturing base.
He noted that plastic automotive components could significantly increase in value through full production integration, citing a potential rise from $3–5 per unit to around $50 once full value chains are established.
The government, he said, is simultaneously advancing other industrial projects in coordination with international manufacturers, including metal components production in Batna.
Beyond industrial policy, officials said the project is expected to generate direct and indirect jobs for engineers, technicians and skilled workers, particularly for young people in the region.
