Algeria Reaffirms Commitment to Strengthening Cooperation Within the GECF, Arkab Says

BY Dr. Hana Saada

ALGIERS- At a meeting held in Algiers on Sunday, Minister of State and Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to strengthening dialogue and cooperation among member countries of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), according to a statement issued by the ministry.

The meeting was held with GECF Secretary General Philip Mshelbila, who is currently on a working visit to Algeria, and attended by senior officials from the energy sector, including representatives of the National Agency for the Valorization of Hydrocarbon Resources (ALNAFT), the Hydrocarbons Regulatory Authority (ARH), and the Gas Research Institute (GRI), as well as ministry executives.

According to the statement, Arkab highlighted Algeria’s decades-long experience in the natural gas industry, spanning exploration, production, transport, liquefaction, and commercialization. He reiterated Algeria’s readiness to place this expertise at the service of the Forum and its member states through enhanced technical and scientific cooperation and the exchange of best practices.

For his part, the GECF Secretary General praised Algeria’s central role within the Forum and its active contribution to strengthening cooperation among member countries, as well as its support for the development of the Gas Research Institute and its broader efforts to reinforce the Forum’s international standing.

The discussions also covered developments in global gas markets and the challenges facing the industry amid ongoing geopolitical and economic shifts, particularly issues related to supply security, investment sustainability, and evolving global demand for natural gas.

Both sides stressed the importance of strengthening coordination among member states, in line with the outcomes of the 7th GECF Summit held in Algiers in March 2024, including the Algiers Declaration. They underscored the strategic role of natural gas as a key pillar of global energy security and a central component of a balanced and equitable energy transition that takes into account both producer and consumer interests.

The meeting further highlighted the need to continue investment across the natural gas value chain to ensure long-term supply stability and market resilience.

Discussions also focused on the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) project linking Algeria, Niger, and Nigeria, which is seen as a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing regional economic integration, supporting sustainable development, and strengthening energy security for transit countries and international markets.

Both parties welcomed progress achieved in advancing the project, noting the commencement of its implementation phase as a reflection of shared political will to deepen energy cooperation and partnership.

They also emphasized the growing role of the GECF as a strategic platform for dialogue among gas-producing countries and its importance in shaping common positions in international energy forums, while improving analysis of global market trends.

A significant part of the discussions was dedicated to the activation of the GECF Gas Research Institute (GRI), as a strategic initiative stemming from the 7th Summit. The two sides called for accelerating its scientific programs and strengthening partnerships with universities, research centers, and energy companies across member states, to enhance innovation, capacity-building, and knowledge transfer in support of the industry’s technological development.

At the conclusion of the visit, the delegation toured the GRI facilities and was briefed on its activities aimed at promoting scientific research and innovation in the energy sector.
