Algeria Retains Baccalaureate Examination System as Education Reform Targets Curriculum Modernisation

Education Minister Mohamed Seghir Saadaoui confirmed that the structure and format of the national baccalaureate examination will remain unchanged, while a broad package of curriculum reforms—covering primary, middle and secondary education—will take effect from the 2026–2027 academic year to strengthen core competencies and better prepare students for higher education.

ALGIERS – Algeria will maintain the current structure and examination format of its national baccalaureate while implementing a comprehensive overhaul of school curricula beginning with the 2026–2027 academic year, Education Minister Mohamed Seghir Saadaoui announced on Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference outlining the latest measures under the country’s ongoing education reform programme, Saadaoui stressed that no changes would be made to the baccalaureate examination system. Students will continue to sit examinations in the subjects prescribed under the third-year secondary school curriculum.

Instead, the reforms will focus on modernising curricula across all three levels of compulsory education—primary, middle and secondary—through streamlined programmes, reorganised learning content, and greater emphasis on science, technology and foreign languages.

At the primary level, the teaching of French will be postponed until the fourth year of primary education, while mathematics instruction will be expanded through the addition of an extra half-hour of classroom time.

In middle education, existing curricula will remain in place, although English language instruction will be strengthened through an increase in both teaching hours and its weighting within the academic assessment framework.

At the secondary level, the minister emphasised that no subjects would be eliminated. Instead, the reform will redistribute and reorganise instructional content across the different academic years, allowing greater classroom time for core subjects aligned with students’ respective specialisations.

Saadaoui also announced enhanced instruction in mathematics, foreign languages and technical disciplines, alongside the introduction of computer science into the mathematics and engineering streams.

According to the minister, the reforms are designed to improve the quality of learning, strengthen students’ academic and technical competencies, and provide stronger preparation for university education, while aligning the national education system with evolving educational and economic priorities.
