ALGIERS – The Bank of Algeria has directed banks and financial institutions to implement a broad package of measures aimed at improving households’ access to banking products and financial services, as part of a nationwide effort to deepen financial inclusion and modernise customer services.
The directive, issued under Note No. 03 by the Central Bank’s Directorate General of Credit and Banking Regulation on 29 July 2026, requires banking institutions to streamline procedures, improve service delivery and respond more efficiently to customers’ financial needs.
Under the new instructions, banks must simplify access to their full range of financial products and significantly reduce the time required to process customer requests.
The measures specifically call for faster handling of applications related to bank account openings, payment services, electronic banking and card services, financing facilities, and savings products, including those offered under Islamic finance.
The central bank also instructed financial institutions to diversify their product offerings in line with household needs while expanding access through a combination of wider branch networks and enhanced digital banking channels.
Particular emphasis was placed on improving banking accessibility for persons with reduced mobility, senior citizens, and other customer groups requiring tailored services, reinforcing the sector’s commitment to inclusive financial access.
In addition, banks have been directed to strengthen customer information, advisory and support services to improve public awareness of available banking products and encourage greater use of formal financial services.
The Bank of Algeria has set 30 September 2026 as the deadline for all banks and financial institutions to fully implement the new measures across their national branch networks.
Institutions will also be required to monitor implementation on an ongoing basis and introduce any additional measures necessary to achieve the objectives of the central bank’s financial inclusion strategy.
The latest directive forms part of Algeria’s broader efforts to modernise its banking sector, improve customer experience, and expand access to formal financial services as the country advances its digital and economic transformation agenda.
