Water Minister Lounès Bouzegza Calls for Faster Delivery of Strategic Projects to Strengthen Public Water Services
During a nationwide coordination meeting, the minister instructed regional water authorities to accelerate project implementation, ensure uninterrupted drinking water and sanitation services during the summer season, and intensify field monitoring and emergency response efforts, particularly in areas recently affected by wildfires.

ALGIERS – Algeria’s Minister of Hydraulics, Lounès Bouzegza, on Thursday called for an acceleration in the implementation of strategic water infrastructure projects while stressing the importance of maintaining uninterrupted public water and sanitation services across the country during the peak summer period.
The minister made the remarks during a nationwide coordination meeting held via videoconference, bringing together senior officials from the Ministry of Hydraulics, directors-general, and regional water sector managers from the wilayas of Béchar, Adrar, Tindouf, Laghouat, Relizane, Aïn Defla, Sétif, El Oued, Saïda, and Naâma, according to a ministry statement.
The meeting reviewed the current status of drinking water supply and sanitation services, alongside progress on infrastructure projects and operational programmes under implementation in the participating provinces.
Bouzegza instructed local authorities to ensure the continuity of public water services—covering both potable water distribution and sanitation—and to accelerate the completion of projects expected to have a direct impact on improving service delivery during the summer season.
He also called for strengthened field monitoring, continuous operational oversight, and rapid intervention to address technical failures and respond promptly to citizens’ concerns in order to safeguard service stability.
The minister further urged sector officials to expedite the completion of priority and emergency projects by shortening implementation timelines while ensuring compliance with quality standards and contractual commitments.
Concluding the meeting, Bouzegza commended the efforts of managers, engineers and workers across the water sector for maintaining continuous water supplies to citizens, particularly in areas affected by the recent wildfires.
He also praised their contribution, alongside other public institutions, to firefighting operations carried out in several provinces, highlighting the sector’s role in supporting national emergency response efforts.
