Algerian Industry and Pharmaceutical Production Minister Wassim Kouidri has installed a multidisciplinary expert commission tasked with issuing recommendations on the national list of essential medicines.
According to a statement issued on Thursday, the body is expected to contribute to the development of a national pharmaceutical production strategy based on actual therapeutic needs. The initiative is intended to strengthen the healthcare system and ensure the availability of safe and effective essential drugs, in line with presidential directives to guarantee patient access to treatment.
Chaired by Professor Amar Tbaibia, the 21-member commission brings together representatives from several sectors, including defence, higher education and scientific research, health, and labour and social security. It also includes national institutions such as the National Health Security Agency, the National Agency for Pharmaceutical Products, the Central Pharmacy of Hospitals, the Pasteur Institute, and the National Pharmacovigilance Centre and Medical Devices Control, alongside medical, pharmaceutical and dental experts.
The minister said the panel’s technical and scientific expertise would be central to updating the national list of essential medicines, based on rigorous evaluation and prioritisation of treatments for common diseases.
Its conclusions are expected to align the essential medicines list with national production and import programmes, while tracking scientific and pharmaceutical developments and adjusting supply to therapeutic needs.
The commission’s chair thanked the minister for his confidence, pledging to carry out the mandate with rigour, responsibility and integrity in the national interest.
