Algeria’s energy and mining potential was set out on Sunday in Algiers at a high-level PwC economic forum held at the International Conference Centre (CIC), where three ministers, the CEO of Sonatrach and an international expert outlined the country’s strategic positioning across hydrocarbons, renewables and mining.

Minister of State and Hydrocarbons Minister Mohamed Arkab said Algeria remains Europe’s principal energy supplier, connected via three gas pipelines, two of them direct. He said the country is seeking to diversify export destinations, particularly in liquefied natural gas, positioning itself as a stable supplier in an uncertain global environment and a key actor in the shift towards cleaner energy.

Arkab said Algeria is simultaneously investing in infrastructure and large-scale strategic projects, citing the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline as a potential continental energy corridor. He added that the “Algeria Bid Round 2026” signals a further opening of the hydrocarbons sector to foreign investment, alongside efforts in green hydrogen and renewables.

Minister of Mines Mourad Hanifi highlighted Algeria’s combination of extensive mineral resources and an energy base supporting downstream industrial development. He said priority is being given to building mining value chains, particularly phosphate, estimated at 840 million tonnes of exploitable reserves, alongside iron ore and steel production, which he described as key to job creation and local value retention. Mining investments, he said, are approaching $28bn.

He also cited the Gara Djebilet iron ore project, recently brought into production, with an annual capacity of 50 million tonnes and reserves estimated at 3.5 billion tonnes.

Energy Minister Mourad Adjal presented a forthcoming national energy consumption model to be submitted to the government, aimed at addressing seasonal electricity demand peaks, particularly in summer. The framework, he said, will underpin a broader energy efficiency strategy, adding that Algeria has the potential to emerge as a continental energy hub.

The CEO of Sonatrach outlined the group’s five-year strategy, focusing on expanding its African footprint and targeting entry into the global top ten energy companies.
