US-Africom Commander Meets Algeria’s Military Leadership to Deepen Strategic Cooperation

BY Dr. Hana Saada

General Saïd Chanegriha, Minister Delegate to the Minister of National Defence and Chief of Staff of the People’s National Army (ANP), held talks on Tuesday in Algiers with General Dagvin Anderson, Commander of the United States Africa Command (US-Africom), in a visit framed as an incremental step in the consolidation of bilateral military cooperation.

According to a statement from the Ministry of National Defence, the discussions reviewed the state of defence cooperation between Algeria and the United States and exchanged views on issues of mutual concern. Chanegriha described the visit as “a new link in strengthening the process of bilateral cooperation,” notably following the January 2025 memorandum of understanding on military cooperation.

The two sides discussed prospects for deepening strategic dialogue and expanding cooperation across multiple military dimensions, grounded in mutual respect and the implementation of agreed frameworks.

Algeria also reiterated its continental security role within African Union mechanisms to combat terrorism and violent extremism. Chanegriha referred to Algeria’s initiatives, including proposals for an African counterterrorism fund, a continental list of designated individuals and entities involved in criminal activity, and an African arrest warrant mechanism. He also referenced the coordination role entrusted to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune within the African Union on counterterrorism and violent extremism.

General Anderson expressed satisfaction with the visit and affirmed his readiness to further strengthen military cooperation. He highlighted the level of coordination between the two sides and commended the contribution of the ANP to regional security and stability.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of National Defence and the ANP General Staff, alongside members of the US delegation.
