Algeria–United States Review Mining Cooperation Opportunities Under New Investment Framework

Algeria and the United States have reviewed opportunities for enhanced cooperation in the mining sector, particularly in exploration, extraction and mineral processing, according to a statement from the Ministry of Mines and Mining Industry.
The discussions took place on Sunday in Algiers between Secretary of State for Mines and Mining Industry Karima Bakir Tafer and U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Mark A. Schapiro, in the presence of senior ministry officials.
The meeting examined strategic partnership avenues created by Algeria’s evolving mining policy framework, which officials say aims to attract greater foreign direct investment and support technological development in the sector. The Algerian side presented key provisions of the country’s new mining law, describing it as a more competitive and investor-friendly framework, particularly for international operators with advanced technical expertise.
Talks also focused on strengthening cooperation in mineral exploration, extraction and industrial transformation, as well as integrating advanced technologies into large-scale mining projects. Both sides discussed potential collaboration in training and skills development through U.S.-supported programmes.
At the end of the meeting, both parties welcomed what they described as the quality of bilateral dialogue and expressed a shared interest in fostering direct partnerships between Algerian and American companies, including through reciprocal business delegations and technical exchanges.
