Algerian Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of the National Community Abroad, Sofiane Chaib, met on Sunday in Manchester with members of the Algerian diaspora as part of his working visit to the United Kingdom, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting, held with the participation of Algeria’s ambassador and consul general in London, also brought together members of the national community from Manchester and other areas in northern England.

The ministry said the initiative forms part of ongoing state efforts to strengthen direct communication and regular consultation with Algerians abroad, particularly those residing far from diplomatic and consular representations, with the aim of maintaining closer ties with citizens wherever they are located.

Chaib stressed that the approach is based on direct dialogue, listening to concerns, and taking into account the aspirations of the diaspora in order to reinforce trust and strengthen links with the homeland. He reiterated the “privileged role” of the Algerian community abroad as a strategic human resource, underlining the state’s commitment to enhancing its contribution to national development.

He also highlighted continued efforts to modernise consular services, expand digitalisation, and simplify administrative procedures in order to improve service delivery and responsiveness to citizens’ needs abroad.

The meeting further reviewed initiatives aimed at strengthening cultural and educational ties with younger generations, including support for associative activities intended to preserve national identity and reinforce a sense of belonging.

Discussions also addressed transport connectivity, notably the request to strengthen air links between Algeria and the United Kingdom. Chaib underscored the importance of launching a new Algiers–Manchester air route as a practical step to facilitate mobility and reinforce links with the homeland.

At the end of the meeting, he praised the patriotism of Algerians in the UK and called on them to continue contributing positively to Algeria’s international standing while maintaining strong ties with their country of origin and transmitting national values to future generations.
