Arab, Pan-African Parliament Leaders Congratulate Khalida Boufedeche on Historic Election
Congratulatory messages from the heads of the Arab Parliament and the Pan-African Parliament hailed Khalida Boufedeche’s election as Algeria’s first female Speaker of the People’s National Assembly, describing the milestone as a testament to women’s growing leadership role in the Arab and African parliamentary landscape.

ALGIERS, Algeria — The election of Khalida Boufedeche as President of Algeria’s People’s National Assembly (APN) has drawn congratulations from the leadership of both the Arab Parliament and the Pan-African Parliament, with officials describing her appointment as a landmark achievement for parliamentary representation and women’s political leadership.
Arab Parliament hails a “historic milestone”
Arab Parliament President Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Yamahi extended his congratulations to Boufedeche following her election, wishing her success in leading the lower house of Parliament and guiding its work in a manner that meets the aspirations of the Algerian people.
In a statement, Al-Yamahi said Boufedeche’s election reflects the confidence placed in her by members of the Assembly and recognizes her experience, competence and ability to strengthen the legislative institution in support of national development, stability and the public interest.
He further described her election as the first woman to preside over Algeria’s People’s National Assembly as a historic national achievement that underscores the prominent role of Algerian women and highlights the growing contribution of Arab women to political and parliamentary life.
According to the Arab Parliament President, the milestone also reflects the broader progress made in empowering women to assume senior leadership positions and consolidating their participation in decision-making institutions across the Arab world.
Pan-African Parliament pledges stronger cooperation
Separately, Fateh Boutbig, President of the Pan-African Parliament, congratulated Boufedeche on behalf of the institution’s members, expressing confidence in her ability to successfully lead Algeria’s legislative chamber.
Boutbig said her election demonstrates the trust she enjoys among lawmakers and reflects her capacity to strengthen Parliament’s constitutional role, improve legislative performance, deepen democratic practice and respond to the expectations of Algerian citizens.
He also noted that Boufedeche’s appointment illustrates the significant progress achieved by Algerian women in assuming senior public responsibilities and reflects Algeria’s continued efforts to expand women’s participation in political and institutional life.
The Pan-African Parliament President reaffirmed his commitment to further strengthening cooperation and coordination between the Pan-African Parliament and Algeria’s People’s National Assembly in support of shared priorities, parliamentary cooperation and African integration.
The congratulatory messages follow Boufedeche’s election as the first woman to head Algeria’s lower house of Parliament since the country’s independence in 1962, marking a historic milestone in the evolution of the country’s legislative institutions.
