President Tebboune Receives APN Speaker Khalida Boufedeche, Emphasizes Priorities for Algeria’s Next Phase
ALGIERS, Algeria — President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Wednesday received President of the People’s National Assembly (APN) Khalida Boufedeche, during her first official audience since becoming the first woman in Algeria’s history to lead the lower house of Parliament.

The meeting, held at the Presidency of the Republic, was attended by Mustapha Sayeh, Presidential Adviser in charge of Political Affairs and Relations with Youth, Civil Society and Political Parties.
Following the audience, Boufedeche said President Tebboune congratulated her on her election as Speaker of the People’s National Assembly, describing her appointment as a historic milestone that marks the first time a woman has assumed the presidency of the APN since Algeria’s independence.
She also stated that she received the President’s guidance regarding the priorities and challenges facing Algeria during the next phase of its national development.
“I had the honor of being received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who kindly congratulated me on my election as President of the People’s National Assembly, as the first woman to hold this position in the history of independent Algeria. I also had the privilege of listening to the President’s guidance concerning the challenges of the coming period and the need for greater coordination, collective effort and complementarity among the country’s institutions in the service of the nation and its citizens,” Boufedeche said.
The newly elected Speaker reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to carrying out its constitutional responsibilities with a strong sense of responsibility and consensus, in line with the President’s vision for what he has described as a “Victorious Algeria.”

Earlier this week, after securing the confidence of lawmakers to preside over the Assembly, Boufedeche pledged to work with all parliamentary groups without exception through consultation, cooperation and institutional partnership to advance Algeria’s national interests and respond to citizens’ expectations.
She stressed that the People’s National Assembly remains the constitutional forum where the popular will is expressed through legislation, oversight of government action and evaluation of public policy. She also underlined the importance of improving legislative quality and strengthening parliamentary performance to support the country’s economic, social and political transformation.
Boufedeche further committed to reinforcing institutional coordination with the Council of the Nation and the Government while fully respecting the constitutional prerogatives of each institution.
Describing her election as a watershed moment in Algeria’s parliamentary history, she said the appointment reflects the country’s ongoing institutional reforms and the political commitment to expanding the participation of qualified Algerian women in leadership positions.
According to Boufedeche, her election represents not only a personal responsibility but also recognition of Algerian women’s growing contribution to public life, as part of a broader national project aimed at building a modern, democratic and merit-based state.
